About This Chapter
Back on the boat, Huck asks his brother-in-law what he's been up to. Huck tells him that he wants to get his girlfriend back. He says that even if they became lovers, they wouldn't be able to keep it a secret forever, so they'd have to throw away everything from their family and their place in society. Huck asks if he has the resolve to do this, and Huck says that he does, but that he'll have to wait until they get back to the shore. He asks Huck to give him one last wish before they return to the boat: to ask him to give up some of his possessions so that he and Huck can get their girlfriend. Huck is all, "Sure, I'll do that, but I'm not sure if I have the resolve." Huck tells Huck that he brought some dessert with him to eat after lunch, and he asks Huck if he can talk about the dessert for the next few days. Huck says he'd like to talk about it, but he doesn't know how to. He's just been "fed up" with his self, and when he finally got a piece of cake, he turned it down. He thinks maybe he should have thrown away his possessions in order to get her.
