The chapter opens with a conversation between the protagonist and his father. The protagonist tells his father that he is going to America for a surgery. He tells him that he will never see him again, but that it is "incurable" . He says that he wants to see his sister, who has been accused of adultery. He asks his father if he can still see her, but his father says that it would be too cruel for him to do so. He then tells the protagonist that he has been in love with his sister for the past year, but he realizes that they cannot do anything to make her happy without asking her. He wonders if he could pick a flower and make it beautiful. He realizes that he cannot do that, but still something is "overwhelming" in his love for his sister. He begs his father to let them reach his sister and says that the time they have spent together will soon be torn apart
