About This Chapter
The next morning, the Governess wakes up in her room and tells her maid that she's had a sexual encounter with an angel named iori. The Governess tells iori that it's her chance to "get my pay back at once" . She tells her that the cat has been "making a fool of" her since the trip to the school, and that iori has been acting like a "fool" ever since. She asks if iori wants to talk to "yakumo" , and iori says no, but that they'll keep her at the church for the evening. When iori asks if she wants to speak to yakumo, she says yes, and then she says that she hasn't changed since she was a mischievous child in England. She says that it seems that she is doing well in Japan, and she can't believe how long it has been since she last saw her. She goes on to say that she feels like she has been living in Japan for ten years, and now it seems like she is "doing well" there. She wonders why iori is behaving the way she does, and wonders if she should "show restraint" now that she seems to be doing so well. When she sees that the place of worship is full of stray dogs, she realizes that it must be a place of "worship," and she wonders why she cannot behave the way the other girls do. She thinks that it would be better if someone else took responsibility for iori, since this convent has a reputation for being a good place to live. She also wonders if it would have been better if she had stayed in England, where she was "covered in mud" and "looked like an angel."
