About This Chapter
It's autumn, and the pot of miso soup is boiling. The narrator says that he's been eating too much, and that's why he doesn't say anything about it sooner. He's not angry at the guy who broke his arm, he just wants to get some food. He tells the narrator that he can't complain too loudly, because he'll get hurt if he complains too loudly. He also says that lala is the one who destroyed his shoes, and she's the only one who'll be able to taste the "long, thin vengeance" of his shoes. He wants to switch his bowl to lala, so he can have some food with her. He apologizes for his arm and says that it's inconvenient for him to use only one arm. He says that ceramics have been part of the Japanese soul since the Jmon period, and he reminds the narrator to treat each moment as if it were a sacred moment. He then says that the very clay that we use for pottery is a "part of history itself" , and should be cut off in one "clean shot" . He goes on to say that the potter's spirit is supposed to be working on the pot, but the pot is falling apart again. He asks the narrator if he can see the potter working on it, but she says that she can only see it from the perspective of the potter. She tries to get him to eat her invisible curry, but he won't eat it. She then asks him to get her a glass of water, which he can only get by eating his invisible spoon. She asks him what else he needs,
