Hanai wakes up in the middle of the night to find that he has fallen asleep on the school grounds. He can't find a way to get home because he's been running all day. He's exhausted, and he knows that he'll die if he doesn't make it home in time. He knows that if he does, it'll be because he started the journey too early. Hanai tells us that it's the day of his class trip to the beach to pick up litter.
