In this chapter, the two young people discuss their future plans after graduating from high school. They decide to stay over for the night at the house of a friend of theirs, who lives in Tochigi Prefecture. The two decide to have dinner together and then go to bed. The narrator tells us that the two of them have never had a sleepover before, and that this is their first one together. He says that he wants to be friends with his friend after he graduates from college. He wants to find a place to stay after he and his friend go off to college, and he wants them to stay together after they graduate. He thinks about how he used to think of college as far off, but now that he's graduated, he realizes that it's actually very real. He remembers when he was in high school, when he would stop in the middle of the street to stare at the sky and think about what it would be like to be an adult. Now, he thinks, he can picture college life as being as natural as it is, but he can't really imagine himself as an adult, because he'll be twenty-five years old in ten years. He's having trouble figuring out what to do with his life after college, since he doesn't have a clear idea of what he'd like to do.
