About This Chapter
Time passes, and the narrator tells us that he's been living in the mountains for a long time. He's had a dream about a girl climbing up Mount Fuji, singing a song about fleas and ruck sacks. The song is called "Yankee Doodle Dandy," and it's about a woman climbing up a mountain. The narrator says that the girl looks like she's walking all the way up to the mountains to bring water to the trees. The girl says that they're supposed to be watering the flowers back at home, but the land owner has asked them to cut down the trees to make room for new houses. They're cutting the trees down this summer, the narrator says, because the landowner wants to build new houses on the land. He asks the girl to pray every day, and she says that's what the landowner asked her to do. She's going to pray for the trees, and then she'll pray for them again next year. The girls pray together, and they sing the song, which is about how the trees need to be cut down this year, so that they can build more houses. Then the girls sing again, and this time, the trees burst into bloom. They still tell the story of how the girl prayed, and how she prayed for them all the time, even after they cut it down.
