This scene opens with four eyes staring at each other. The narrator asks the four of them why they are keeping watch on each other, and they reply that they are there to see what is going on between Haruki and San. Haruki is not there as a representative of the class, but as a friend of the protagonist. She asks the protagonist why he is keeping watch, and the protagonist replies that he is there for the sake of his friend, and that he does not seem angry about his situation. He says that he has only one thing he cares about, and this is that he doesnt seem to be in love with Haruki. The protagonist says that his love for Haruki has ended without him even knowing it, and he is about to burst into tears. He tells the protagonist that his friend is at a loss as to what to say to Haruki about his feelings for another woman. He wants to tell her that he loves her, but that he respects everything about her, and wishes that he could leave her alone. He asks if he can go, but the protagonist tells him that he cannot, because he has to tell Haruki how he is loved.
