The narrator tells us that this is the first time he's ever been on a hike, and he thinks it's a great opportunity to get close to a girl. Everyone has to go through the gate that says "yes" or "no" , and the narrator calls them the "make" and "the make" . He says that if he doesn't do it, no one will go back to the ward. He's not back, he says, because he just burned all the bridges with the other guys. The narrator asks what's going on, and everyone says they're going through the "free gate" and the "yes gate," but he can't figure out how to get through. He asks if anyone has a crush, and they all say yes. He thinks that everyone is looking at him like a "curious" and a "popular" person. He wonders if he should be more considerate, but everyone says he should just go through with it. He tries to think of a way to make it go away, but they all start yelling at each other.
