About This Chapter
The scene shifts to the edge of the cliff, where Hirohito is trying to hide the fact that he has to return to the village with Roxane. He is worried that if she does not show up for the festival, they will not be able to hide her absence from the King. He tells the audience that he is in a hurry, and that he will not fall prey to the "brats" of the crowd. He reminds them that he himself is 100 years younger than they are. He says that he does not need another man to defy them. He also tells them that they have heard of "good will" toward all men, and he says that they are getting worked up over "stupid racism" . He asks the audience to buy him some time, as he is sure that Roxane will show up at the festival. The crowd is waiting for him, but he is unable to tell them where he has run off to. They ask him if he is all right, and when he cannot tell them why, they ask him to use his dancing to make the crowd happy.
