About This Chapter
In this chapter, the Governess raves about the power of the stars to change the future. She tells the audience that she has been given a "true mission" , and that the feast she is about to celebrate is one of "enlightenment" . The Governess, however, is not satisfied with this mission, and she asks her son-in-law to tell her what is wrong with the world. He tells her that people were just killing each other and that they were laughing at each other. He says that he doesn't care if he only saves a few people, but that if he can smile, then people will be sorry for being "in a drag." He then tells her about the "holy ground" of star memory, where he can manipulate space and time. He explains that the stars power is great for changing the past for the better, or for the worse. He also says that at the holy ground, he can touch the ceiling and "turn memories into pictures." He tells elie that he has been looking for his memories for a long time, but now he is afraid to know. He thinks that his father was looking for him to get information from the star, but he says that the star could not have shown him "the future." He also thinks that another elie was also looking for her father, but there was something else that he didn't know.
