In this chapter, Eno and Haruki continue their search for the key to the fortress. They find a tunnel that they believe to be another dead end. They wonder if the tunnel was built by ghosts, but Eno says that they must not tell anyone about the tunnel because it is too dark to see any ghosts. Eno wonders if the tunnels were built by the same person who built the previous one. He wonders if Haruki's age is a trigger for the tunnel's construction. He also wonders whether the tunnel designer was a "perv" or a "designer's perv" . Eno suggests that they keep going because they have found a secret passage, but Haruki insists that it is not a secret passageway, but a way for them to return home. Eno thinks that they might be killed if they continue on, but he wonders if there is a lever in the tunnel that could open another passage. He then wonders if someone planted a scarf there to lure them into the tunnel. Eno then wonders about the scarf and wonders if it might have been planted by someone who wanted them to be killed. He thinks that the scenery might not bode well for them, and they should not pursue traps. Eno sees levers on the rocks and wonders whether they are the ones that open the tunnels. He decides that only one of the levers works, and he decides to try it out.
