About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that Alexander has forgotten ten of the ten things he was supposed to remember in the past three months. We learn that he's also forgotten the name of his wife, who is now called "mutata" . We also learn that the wheel chair that Alexander used to sit in was the best wheel chair in the world, and that the only thing that tastes bad after thirty is "heavenly gum" , which only lasts for twenty seconds. Alexander says that the other candidates for a pilot's seat are getting ready to take off, so he asks "umma" to go outside with him and chew on the new stuff. The other candidates are all "first-rate" pilots, which means they're the best pilots in the class, according to Alexander. He thinks that Alexander is a good teacher, but that the differences in skill aren't as great as they seem. He also says that Alexander's name is so long that it reminds him of "mu-kkun," a character from the novel The Kite Runner. He says he'll be his instructor, and he wonders if Namba-san has finished his "make-up test," which is the most important part of the flight test. Alexander notes that he was the only instructor who could keep up the pace with the other students, and so he was ranked last out of the five. He's the only one who had to take a make-up exam, because he also had the lowest score on the test. So, he says, he taught him how to fly, and now he thinks that he will be the next instructor assigned to the students.
