In this chapter, we are introduced to Kate and her son, Chris, who are playing a game of "zero gravity" . Kate asks her son if he used to play with his father, and he says that he did, but that his father was not around much anymore. Kate tells him that her son is three years old and that he does not know his father very well. She asks him if this is his last mission, and when he says yes, she tells him to fix his body in place and take control of the suction device. Kate instructs him to squeeze when using the glove, and his pinky finger controls the switch on the glove. Kate then tells him how to use the surgical stapler, which is a device that is used to cut open a person's lung. Kate says that the bleeding is not stopping, and that it looks like her son's lungs are more damaged than they thought. She says that she is sorry that she has to go pick him up some other day, but when he tells her that he is going to reject her and go with his son, she asks him to get her a ride to pick up her son. He agrees, and says that there is a waiting list for a ride, and now that he has a chance, he will go and pick up his son.
