In this chapter, we learn that Betty has returned to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration after her husband and fellow astronaut were killed in a space crash in 2023. She is now raising her nine-year-old son, Chris. Betty tells us that she has decided to go back to space because she wants to "regain her dreams" and because she thinks that people will talk about her again once they hear about her. She also tells us about a book she has written about her son's father, a famous Italian artist named Carlo Calzotti. She says that the book is a "sell-ing like crazy" and that it makes her very happy. She adds that she is a little hungry, but she has just the thing she needs: a big bang burger and a "rocket dog" . She asks him what he needs courage for, and he tells her that he needs it because he knows that people think poorly of him. He says that maybe his bosses respected him because he was a man who did not make mistakes. He adds that his bosses never saw him as a man because he had never made mistakes, and that they simply did not want to replace him since he was so good at his job. He also says that he has never enjoyed his job because it is not "functional enough" and he had to work on small parts so small that he could not even see them. He calls the burger "the galaxy spicy burger" and says that it is "just spicy is all, though it was just a thought, is all." Betty says that she and her son are ahead of the competition in the category of "jocks" , and she says that even if they cannot get to one million jokers, they will still be able to cut costs by assigning them.
