About This Chapter
This chapter's epigraph comes from a conversation between Kishikiori and the doctor, in which the doctor says that the patient is worse than before, and that he expects her to last only a few weeks before she dies. He also says that he has no choice but to perform the surgery, since the flunkies are hostile towards them. The doctor says he will not be able to do the surgery since they are near the town of Okayina, which means that they will have to go back to the city of Okayinawa, where they can find a doctor. Kishiori says that they have won against the condors and the saber-toothed tigers, but that they are only human beings, and they will beat the "bastards" out of them. He tells the story of how the area came to be known as the "suka" and the "sumi" . The sumi were a group of people who lived in the area, and the isuka were a small group who lived there. One day, a girl from the sumi went missing, and rumors spread that she had gone missing for some reason. This upset the peace, and a war broke out between the two groups. In the ensuing war, almost 100 people were killed, including the girl. The men decide that the best way to get rid of the boys is to get the girls to kill them. They decide to have the stewardess give sweets to the girls, since they have the patient.
