Chapter 109 opens with a description of the island and its inhabitants. It is clear that the island's inhabitants are not very well organized, and they must rely on their leader to keep them from running away or hiding. The leader is a strong man, and he feels that his daughter must have been incredible for the people to praise him. However, after a month, the leader decides to leave the island, and the inhabitants continue to explore the island. They find a window, which they excavate around. They decide to explore inside the window, and discover that it extends a distance of several hundred meters. They wonder if they might be able to return to the island if they could find a way to get there. The two men discuss the possibility of landing an aircraft on the island; they wonder if it would be safe for them to go back to the mainland. The men also discuss the fact that the leader is strong, but he does not look like he has much of a life left. He can freely manipulate late life. He is also a doctor, and everyone in the island is out of action because of the leader's treatment of nishikiori. They feel that they would rather die than be slaves to the leader, so they run away.
