The chapter opens with a flashback to a time in which a group of humans were attacked by a pack of wild rhinos. The humans were able to escape, but not before one of them had eaten the flowers of the garden. The narrator tells us that this is the first time he has ever felt like he has won a battle, and that it is his first time meeting someone like him. He tells the group that he is worried that someone has been using his journal to spy on them
