About This Chapter
It's been a while since we've seen the group, but now that we're back on the boat, we find ourselves wondering what the heck is going on. First off, we learn that the "splash" is an alligator, which is an ancestor of a whale and a "ferocious carnivore" that drags its "prey" into the water and drowns it to death. We learn that it's called "ambulocetus" , which means "torture" in Latin, and that its name comes from the Latin word "ambulo" meaning "to eat" or "to kill" . We also learn that this is not the first time that the group has been attacked by an alligator. The first time they've been attacked was by a whale, and the second time by a shark. The group realizes that they're going to be wiped out if they don't find a way to escape. The only thing they can do is jump into the ocean, but they can't do it without protection. They snap the mast in two, and they'll have to raft out to the open sea to get away from the island. They're not sure what's wrong with the glue on the whale's neck, but it looks like the animal has swallowed it. They decide to wait until the water opens up and they can launch the raft, but then they hear a splash. They realize that they need to get back to the island before the splash re-covers them. They start to panic, and then they realize that the only way they can get away is if they drown.
