This chapter's epigraph comes from a conversation between the Master and his son-in-law. The Master says that he is a "beyondning realm expert" and that he has a plan to defeat all fifty of the "bone forging experts" in the city. He tells the Master that he can only do this by using his own power. He asks the Master to find him a "new pet first." The Master replies that he will find out about the family's situation first. He says that the Master's daughter, Ming, is his granddaughter, and he loves her no less than his own granddaughter. Ming's father says that Ming is his daughter's brother, and the Master says he will let the matter pass. He then tells the father that he loves Ming and wishes Ming well in the future, but that he cannot take away her from her father. The father sighs and says that his daughter is also his granddaughter and he will bear the consequences of his actions
