About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a soliloquy in which Hu points out that men have two kinds of hatreds: hatred for one another and hatred for the people around them. He compares Hu to a man who has to propose to a thousand times to get the same love from a woman. He also points out the hypocrisy of Hu's mission, which is to return to the imperial city. He asks why Hu didn't go to the city to fulfill his mission, instead of wasting his time on another one. Hu says that he's the one who's going to marry Kui, and he wants to fight him in a duel so that he can have some respect. He says that if Hu gets hurt in the duel, he'll kill anyone who dares move. Hu tells Hu that if he gets hurt, even the pavilion will be unable to save him. Hu then says that this is about his "lifelong happiness with Kui" . He tells Hu to admit that he failed in his mission and that he won't harass Kui again. Hu thinks that Hu has some courage, but he also thinks that he was fooled by the appearance of the fat guy. He thinks that this fat guy used a "dirty but reasonable trick" to get what he wanted. Hu is shocked that the fat man is taking off his clothes
