About This Chapter
Every year, the school's karate club holds an inter-school tournament, in which all the students from the school compete against one another. The tournament is a chance for each student to prove his or her mettle against the other students in a single combat match. Soma, who has been injured in the previous match, is eager to take part in the tournament. He tries to cheer up his friend by telling him that if he wins, he will be able to prove that he is a better fighter than the other student. He tells Soma to get the nurse to examine his injured ankle and then to rest it. He says that if Soma makes it worse, it will only make the injury worse. But if he makes it even worse, the team will lose, and soma will be out of the tournament for good. He begs Soma not to give in to temptation. He reminds Soma that it takes a "wise man" to know when it is time for a man to give up. He asks Soma if he would like to be his ideal man if he were to compete in the inter-scholastic tournament.
