About This Chapter
In this short scene, Shmoop explains that he's been coming home from the school festival, where he'll be competing with other students for the same school. Shmoops asks Shmup if he'd like to go see the festival for himself. He's got a message for his mom, who hasn't been paying much attention to his activities at school: she's going to the festival to make sure he doesn't get into her first choice of school again, like he did when he was in high school. He wants to see it for himself, so he decides to meet up with his mom at seven o'clock in the morning to go check it out. He tells his mom that his name is "Miss wabi-sabi" , which means "I'm ugly" in Japanese, and that he plans to "practice" on his own, without his mom's supervision. He says that his mom is probably coming to check on him, and Shmups asks if she'll stay to watch him perform, or if she will go home and watch him "practice" on her own. He asks her if she wants to stay, and she says yes, but that she'd better make sure she goes home before the other students start "pa trolling" her, which is basically telling her that the teachers are going to be watching her perform, and then she can come back and watch her perform. She's not going to stay to see Shmops perform, she says, because Shmupp is coming to see her, and he wants to know what's wrong with her. She says that Shmapps have been trying to get her to study for an exam in order to pass the exam, but Shmpp isn't going to listen to them, so she wants her to just ignore them and focus on her future, which she says is the most important thing in the world. She wants to play the guitar
