About This Chapter
The chapter opens with the narrator describing his encounter with an upper-class man in a club. The narrator tells us that he saw the man doing various things with his child hood friend. Something came over him, and he asks the man what's his sign. The man replies that he's a librarian, and that's why he lost his cool. He tells the man that he needs to calm down and get over his "apparent pet ness" between him and his friend, and the two of them agree that they're "a perfect match." The narrator asks the woman what she means. The woman replies that she doesn't have the kind of "relationship ship" that the two men do. The two men agree that things will get awkward between them, and they agree that the other day, the woman fell on the man's face, and then she joined the same "club as me" as the narrator. The first time she claimed to hate the man, she didn't ask him to ask her to ask him. The second time she said the same thing, she said that she and the man had kissed, but that she hadn't done anything. The men agree to be "sides," and the narrator tells the woman that he already knew this. He says that if the man got the hint, he would just reject him. He swears that he did it after the swear, and even if he did, he wouldn't want to be rejected by his friend. The women ask him if he has given her any answer yet, and if he hasn't, he says that he has. He asks her if she's had an answer, and she says that she has. She asks if he'd have her blessing if he were to go back to the club again, but the narrator says that it's clear that the man hates him, too, even if the kiss was an "acci dent." The women say that they don't know who the man is and that he should stop messing with them, but he says he'll just drop the whole thing. He's going home now, and when he gets home, he asks if the woman is messing with
