At the beginning of this chapter, the narrator tells us that he's trying to make the new members of the drama club cry. He tells them that he thinks they're cute, but that their voices aren't quite right. He suggests that they try speaking more "crisply" and "clearer" . The narrator doesn't want to sound like a bad person, but he does want to make sure that the girls are listening to what he says. He says he'll try to teach the girls a little more, and that they'll have to pay him for it.
