The narrator tells us that he can send messages to other people's minds. He's got a special gift for that: he knows how to talk to people, and he can talk to them in a way that makes them think. He can tell if they're thinking of him or not, so he can tell whether or not they like each other. The narrator says that she doesn't know if he likes her or not. She's afraid that he'll think that she's a coward for not telling him how she feels. She tells him that she usually rides the train with him to school, but that she hasn't been able to do so today because the train has been delayed. He tells her that they'll be late if they don't start picking up the pace. He says that he was waiting for her, and she says that's why she waited for him. He asks her if she thinks of him as a friend. She says that since middle school, they've been good friends, and that means that she has a chance to be with him. She asks if she should wait for him, but he says that they become lovers the next day.
