About This Chapter
The three-legged race has begun, and it's time for the "find race" . This year, the gender of the runners is "mixed gender" , which means that they're all men and women. This is the first time we've heard this phrase before, so we're not sure what to make of it. The narrator tells us that the race is for "the three legged . . mixed gender" and that this year's runners will be "sugawara, takano, and chii-chan." The narrator is bummed that he's not tall enough to be paired with a guy like takano. He's also bummed that "patricia" has a "boy friend" who's a little taller than him, so he wishes he'd been paired with someone else. He also wishes he were paired up with a girl like "Sugawara" instead of a boy like "Takiano," because he thinks she'll make him feel a little better about his own lack of height. But the narrator doesn't know what to say. He wants to know what's going on with "goda," but he can't tell whether or not she's having a good time with him. He tries to tell her that she looks like a "father and daughter," but she won't listen to him. She tells him to "sooth it off" and "knock it off," but the narrator is too distracted to notice. He tells her to go ahead and "shooth" and then "knock take ruuu," which is a slang term for "shake it off." He then tells her that he wants to be "one two," meaning he wants her to be with him, and she should be with her, too. She agrees, and they begin to run the race. They're running the middle leg, which is supposed to be the hardest part of the race, and the narrator wants to make sure they don't run too fast. He asks if "Goda" is doing anything wrong, and he guesses that she is. He then asks if they are okay, and if they can help him up
