About This Chapter
Act 13 opens with a soliloquy by the Governess. She tells her attendants that she has known for a long time that the end of her life would be the same as that of her dead daughter. She says that she couldn't bear to let her daughter die like that, and that she hates this too. The Governess tells her to take hold of her hatred and reach through the "barrier of time" to her chosen successor. She also tells her that the school of the second court doesn't get her wrong, she's only telling her to go to the school so that she can get herself a girlfriend. She asks her sister if she can borrow the word "tongyue" from the journal of the Grand Master of the Second Court. The sister says that the word is "token of the head" of the school. The word is not her time yet, and the journal is blank. The contents of the grand master's journal, she says, probably cannot be read by anyone who has been chosen by "the word of /Tongyue." She asks what she plans to do with the journal contents, but the sister says she'll have to give her a "massage for an extra
