The storm keeper could not have seen the hole, because the keeper's face was covered with dirt. He could not even recognize the keeper as a keeper, because he was covered in dirt. We learn that this is because the crow is the crow. The crow is able to sense the wind because he is using his eyes to see what the wind is doing. He can hear the sound of the wind coming from the body of the keeper, and he can stay in the room if he wants to.
