In this chapter, the Underground Man delivers a series of soliloquys. The Underground Man begins by saying that he's learned how to ride in the water. He thanks everyone for their hard work in the summer training camp. He says that his body has a lot more blood than a normal man's, and that's why he can move around for so long. He also says that he was created to be a "genius" , and if he doesn't have that, he'll get "scrapped" . He then says that if you want to be strong, you have to discipline your back. In Zen philosophy, a monk tells a student to ask his teacher a question, and the teacher responds with the answer, "Somosan," which means "whoosh" or "no somosan." The back is the only thing that shows when a person loses. In other words, a person's back shows when he loses. The battle is between the "strong" and the "mighty." The battle between the strong and the mighty only exists when there's a fight between the two. The "Mighty" show their backs to everyone else as they chase them. The world never sees the back of a person who's lost. He's the "proud peak" of a wall that will one day be "surmounted." He'll collect the blood of all the people who chase him.
