About This Chapter
The narrator notes that the pitch count is 3-1, and that the slider just cannot get outs. He wonders if it's because he's throwing a bad breaking ball, or if the next day's pitch is going to be the same pitch. He's happy that the third baseman steps on the bag and makes a nice play to get out of a jam, but he'd like to see him get a little taste of this "bitter heartbreak" in a game of official baseball. The narrator goes on to say that the other player needs to show some more, too, like when he smacked a change-up into the left field corner, but it was too high and the fielder chased it down. That's the kind of thing that's going to scare the heck out of you, the narrator says. He also says that the second-stringers are holding the starting line to zero runs, so you'll have to hit him if you want to make it in the big leagues.
