About This Chapter
The narrator notes that the crowd is singing a traditional Japanese baseball song, "bam ! . . slam it out" . The narrator says that this is because the umpire is lenient with the low balls, and that the catcher, Muka mati Kengo, is very good at that. Muka Kengo is a "snot" , the narrator says, because he's only just graduated from middle school. He's a good pitcher, and he can find weak spots in a batter. Of course, he'll never be able to "shine like his name," the narrator notes, because the catcher is a piece of "crap." The narrator points out that the third batter, Seido, is trying to hit a few pitches, but they're coming their way. They'll have to "go after" these "diffi cult pitches" if they want a win. Three outs! Nice pitching! The narrator suggests that they can use this as a chance to get back at the "uncons quered legion" by using the corner work of Magua and the "ironclad defense corps" behind him. Magua is throwing a "brute strength" breaking ball, and Seido is using the opposite approach. The first batter, Kajiyama, hits a double, but it's too late for teito. They need to "focus on the batters exclusively" because of the rain.
