The chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the previous chapter. In this chapter, Hiroshi and his friends are discussing the futility of the current situation. They are at the bottom of the fourth inning, with no outs and no runners on either side of the infield. Hiroshi is worried that the other team is going to try to steal a run, but he is confident that they will be able to do so with the help of the power of the opposing team's batter, Masuko, who has just sent a double down the left-field line. The other team, however, has already taken the lead, and Hiroshi worries that they are about to give up a run. He decides to pinch-hit for Miyuki, who is already on the field. The two of them discuss the possibility of a game-tying run, and the possibility that Masuko has seen through them, but they are confident that he has not.
