About This Chapter
Two outs from the plate, and the ball is already in the hands of the opposing team. They're trying to figure out what to do with it, and they've already got two runs on the board. This is the first time that Mimaki has started at the top of the order since the end of the first round of the playoffs, so he's feeling pretty good. Mimaki's got a great feel for the game, though, and he doesn't seem to mind that the other team has already scored. He's just trying to get through the first two innings without giving up more than two runs. The other team, he says, is looking for "fastballs on easy courses" , and Mimaki isn't trying to do anything more than that. He just needs one good pitch, and that's what Mimaki delivers: a "straight on" fastball with a "bunch of curves" . The narrator says Mimaki is "on a roll" today, but Mimaki can still perform badly, even at his best. He says he wouldn't put too much faith in Mimaki even if he were at his peak, because Mimaki still has a lot to learn. He wonders if Mimaki hasn't already pitched in the fourth inning, and wonders if they can't see Mimaki in the bullpen from here on out. He thinks Mimaki looks like a "meant-pitch" pitcher, and says he'd rather have Mimaki warm up in the "bull pen" than try to figure it out in the batting cage.
