About This Chapter
In the middle of a practice game between the U.S. and U.M. teams, the coach, Hiroshi, asks his son, Sawamura, what he's been up to. Hiroshi tells his son that the game is the last one before the team goes to Japan to play in the World Baseball Classic in August. He says that the two countries are completely different, but that baseball fans in both countries are as passionate about the game as they are about the other team's. The coach says that he knows that the pitcher is a weak point for the team, and that he hopes he can get a few hits off him. He also says that it's hard for him to read the pitcher's timing, because he has to swing fast or he won't be able to get a hit off the pitcher. He's worried that the team hasn't gotten a good hit off of the pitcher so far, and he wonders if the famous celebrity is famous for making jokes in bad Japanese. The kid says he isn't a famous celebrity, but a "zoo" . He tells his father that he'll throw the ball into the mitt of the catcher, Chris Semppai, instead of into the glove of the coach. He doesn't want to let the team lose. He wants to protect his team. He asks if the catcher is going for it, and Hiroshi says that's not the case. He adds that Semppai is "real reckless" for a guy who's never played in a game before. He goes after every single out like he lives for it. He tries to scare his team, he says, like he does every time he leads his team to victory. He thinks that
