About This Chapter
It's morning, and the two of them are getting ready to throw the first pitch of the day. The narrator tells us that this is the first time he's ever been asked to warm up before a game, and that he doesn't want to waste any more time than he already has. He tells the two that they'll have to play catch with each other to get warmed up, and then he tells them that he'll throw a pitch that will decide the outcome of the game: the bottom of the ninth , with two outs, bases loaded. The count is two balls, two strikes. The only pitch he has is this one, and it's going to decide whether the team wins or loses. The two of you are going to make it to the varsity team, he tells us, and they're both going to do it.
