About This Chapter
In the middle of the ninth inning of a middle school game, the coach of the opposing team yells at Araguma for not being more aggressive in the victory. The coach is so mad that he breaks the news to the other players, who taunt him about his record-setting performance in the previous day's game. In a soliloquy, the narrator laments the fact that he is almost forty years old, and that the coach is mad at him for being so silly. He says that he has shown his remorse, but that he will not leave the school. He tells the other students that they will be famous all over Japan before the school closes. He adds that he was so happy that he couldn't stand it. The narrator tells the students that there is a visitor from Tokyo who wants to see what the aura is like. He wants to try his hand at baseball with some of his friends from his hometown. He asks the coach to let him watch one of their practices. He thinks the coach's coaching isn't up to par, and he wants to know if any other players are good enough to challenge him. He wonders if the coach will be able to get rid of the kid who is batting . He wishes that he could show the kid some real batting practice.
