This chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the previous chapter, where the wan-jian warriors were invited to a trial at a large ancient sword lake. The warriors who attended the trial are invited to the lake to participate in a trial of their martial arts skills. The narrator explains that the trial is a first step in the process of joining the jian sect and that the breath that the young man just emitted is the breath of the "Nine Heaven of the Earth spirit".
