When the ghost appears, the Invisible Woman is shocked to find that he is carrying her sword, which is his only possession. She tells the ghost not to try to kill her or else she will kill the girl. The man is laughing at her, and she tells him to behave himself. He is a coward, she says, because he is hiding behind a girl of ten years old. He should obey her commands and throw away his sword. The ghost curses him, and the man flees. The narrator tells us that the price of the stone is high, but at least he will die in his hands.
