About This Chapter
"No subject" The narrator tells us that he found out that he got the part of the teacher's assistant in the school's model school. He's excited about the prospect of being a team captain, but he doesn't want to be the one making the decision. He wants to know why he's being asked to make the choice. The narrator says that he hasn't yet told the team, but that he'll tell them soon. He says that if he were the team's captain, he'd choose him. But if he weren't, why would the team choose him? The narrator asks him to give him time to think it over. He hopes that the teacher will be able to stand how he feels about it. He also says that the team captain has to be "kid-ding" , which is a term used to refer to a person who is a good runner and a good athlete. If he were to become team captain , he says, he wouldn't have to quit the track team if he got tired of it, because it's a team sport. He tells the narrator that he was asked to be team captain by one of the senpais at school. The senpai asked him to tell the team about his decision, and he refused. But he says that being team captain isn't like being a scholarship. He adds that the other guys on the team are more qualified than he is, and that he can't be the captain because he is a runner and not a runner. He admits that he joined the team because of Asahina, but says that everyone has high expectations for him.
