About This Chapter
The narrator complains to the other students at school that he's not mature enough for one of the boys on the team. He tells them that he and the other boys have known each other for five years, and that they've always been friends. The narrator says that the school is supposed to be shut for the day, but he tells the boy to go ahead and hang out with someone else. The boy tells the narrator that it's fine to hang out, but that he shouldn't hang out at school late at night. He says that he has known the other boy since he was a kid, and the boy has always treated him like a kid. The other boy tells him to stop hanging out with him, but the narrator doesn't want to be rude, so he tells him that he should just leave and talk to someone. He asks the boy if he'll do it for him, and he says that it would be cool if he could talk to a guy on the school team for him. The kid says that's cool, but then he realizes that he tried to tell the boy over and over that he was too mature for the boy, but it never happened. He realizes that the boy thought he was being ignored because he wasn't "too plain" , and now he has another chance to show the boy how mature he is. He wants to tell him how much he likes him, so the boy can see that he is mature enough to be friends with him.
