About This Chapter
This chapter's epigraph comes from the opening lines of Act IV, Scene 1 . It's taken place in Porthos, a port city in northeastern Brazil. It is the center of the festival, and it's the place where all the action is taking place. The narrator tells us that the festival is being held in this port city because it is the "heart" of the whole festival. He says that it is good to see everyone there, because there is no one else in the city. He introduces the protagonist, who is a student at the school where the protagonist's father used to teach. The protagonist introduces himself as "Ayakayukihiro" , which means "little grandson" in Japanese. He tells the protagonist that he used to be his father's assistant, and that the protagonist is like his father in every way, except that his eyes are "unmistakable." The protagonist says that everyone in the school is like a student of his grandfather's hair, skin, and eyes. He also says that they are like a "mischief maker" without a care for the world. He asks the protagonist if he is worried about the clone thing, and the protagonist replies that he is not, but that he would be happy if his grandfather were here now. He then asks if the protagonist trusts his grandfather, and he says that he does. He adds that they all trusted him because he is the grandson of their grandfather. This is the first time the protagonist has ever been asked this question, and she says that she is sorry, because she is an old woman. She says that her manners are not the problem, because they always make her feel better. She tells the audience that she was spotted on the International Space Station the night before, and was captured by the telescope veil.
