About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the protagonist's last name is Uchida, and that he is a member of the Ku Klux Klan. He tells us that he wants to marry a woman with "strong inner cores" . We learn that he works for a living as a slumlord, but he doesn't have the money to buy a house or buy a car. He's not rich enough to buy one of these things, and he's also not strong enough to be a leader of the Klan. We also learn that his sister, Kyoko, is a smart woman who knows how to use logic and reason to get ahead in society. Kyoko tells the protagonist that he should be proud of how hard he works and how smart he is. The protagonist is impressed by his sister's ability to think outside of the box. He wants to become a businessman and make a real difference in the world. He asks Kyoko why she keeps saying random things like that, and she tells him that it's because Kyoko's dream is one reason she has to protect him. She says that they're "immortal buddies" and that she's going to stick with him until he can stand her sight. They talk about the fire in the slum, and Kyoko says that the fire is an enemy attack. They're going to have to put out the fire themselves, because they can't deal with it by themselves. They should find someone who can do it for them, and then they'll have someone else to deal with the fire.
