The Governess asks the Governess if she's the one who recruited Darnay. She guesses that he's a traitor, but she doesn't want to kill him. She tells him that she'd rather die than be a part of humankind's demise. She's not sure why he won't just die, since he has so much experience in life. He's just a "dirty rotten cheater" , she tells him. He tells her that he used her as a pawn to get rid of Darnay so that he wouldn't have to worry about his own fate. He says that Darnay probably just threw a fit because he didn't like the idea of making humankind immortal. He wants humans to stay as they are. She says that's like watching humans live their lives shut up. She also says that she loves humans, too, because they're the perfect cradle for weaklings like herself. She thinks that humans should be allowed to live as they want, not be killed.
