About This Chapter
In this short scene, Teta and Udolpho discuss the "shape of happiness" , and Teta reveals that she has been tricked into being alone with her lover, who has tricked her into thinking that he is a male and female figure. She is amazed at how the two of them look in each other's company, and she feels awkward to return to the village where she has lived for so many years. She feels that she is acting like a "naive little teenager," and she wonders why she has not acted like this for so long. She wonders if the girl who was once the demon queen is still inside him, and he replies that she was just "glob flyer" . He feels sorry for her, but he is not sorry for running away. He wonders if she is still in his body, but she replies that it is okay, as long as he puts on some clothes. He says that he feels too awkward to come back to his village, and wonders why he hasn't behaved like this before. He realizes that they haven't had much time to talk since they left their village and now they are in a tourist town. Teta says that her true form is a ten-year-old boy, and that she will never get older. He asks if she wants him to be the son of the hero who sold her the statues. He replies that he wants to become the strongest man in the world, so that he can walk that way for her ward, and so that she can be as happy as he can be. She says that the statues were full of optimism and life, and thanks to them, she says, he will never be forgiven for being happy. She asks him if he means the statues, and when he says that they were "ridious," she says that it was thanks to the statues that the days were so full of "life and boundless optimism." She wonders what is wrong with Tota, who is crying at 120, and asks if he is running away from the village. He responds that he was just using shundo at a time when it was not fair to do so.
