About This Chapter
Chapter 110 opens with a soliloquy about the "eye of the storm" . It's a calm and peaceful place in the middle of a storm. The narrator says that the center of society is quiet and peaceful because people don't have to worry about what's going on around them. For example, a family doesn't want to raise their pet because it might bite the dog. The dog might bite, but the family won't raise it because it's too risky. Another example is when two guys fight over a girl because they're afraid of what the other guy will do if they spoil him. This is just one more example of how the center isn't the safest place to be . In fact, the narrator says, the center is so quiet that people can't even see each other. He also points out that the people in the center aren't afraid of anything, because they know that they'll be punished if they do something wrong. He says that teachers who slap their students for hitting them should resign immediately. He then points to a girl in his class who makes everyone in the class worry about domestic abuse and sexual harassment. She's happy about what she's talking about, but she also seems to notice that people are talking about something else. He thinks that the girl is happy because she knows that she'll get punished if she talks about something that's not appropriate for her class.
