About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that Hiroyuki has come to live as a poor man in order to support himself and his family. Hiroyuki welcomes his brother back to the city and asks him what he's doing there. He says that he doesn't want to be the only poor person in the city, and that he'll do his best to help him out. He's not afraid of poverty, he says, because he knows that he would like to be. He asks Hiroyuki not to tell him what's going on, because this is not a "courage test" . It's a "gross out test." Hiroyuki says that the reason they do this in the summer is because it's so hot that you can't bear to see these things in the heat. He compares the sweat-stained armpits to "treasure hairs" , which are hairs that grow out of moles. He also compares the wet shirt to "nail clippings" and the "mail mail" to "my name's disgusting." The narrator says that poor people don't like to see gross things, because they're so grossed out by them. The narrator then compares the inner parts of the poor people to "camera men" and asks them if there's anything gross in the world that they think is gross. It turns out that the poor have developed an "appreciation for hairs" in the drain, a ten-meter tapeworm, and a hair-growth lotion with honey.
