About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he wants to read all the books in the world. He wants to know everything about the world, because he's a bookworm. He doesn't want us to read his heart, though, because it's too dark. He's not going to let us read his thoughts, he tells us. The narrator says that he'd like to read some books, too, but that he already has a book to read. He says that if he can read everything, he'll be able to understand what's going on in his mind. He tells us about a story about a man who wanted to buy everything he wanted from all corners. The man had a heart, but he died before he could get it. The story goes like this: The king wanted everything, but there was nothing that he didn't have. In exchange for the king's life, the king got a heart. The king was happy that he finally got one, and he was happy to have it for a short time before he died. But the king was too happy to get a heart for a long time, so he gave up his life to get one. So the king gave up everything in exchange for a life, and that's how the story ends.
