About This Chapter
The narrator explains that the "arranged marriage ritual" of the Itoshiki family is a one-day event that begins at midnight and ends at four o'clock in the morning. Everyone in the community is required to participate in the ceremony. The narrator says that he's never heard of such a thing before, and that he hopes he can find a wife "like a normal person" during this time. He's wearing a kimono, and he hopes to find someone to marry him. He says that if he takes advantage of the system, he'll be able to avoid the miai, or eye-to-eye contact, that's part of the marriage ritual. He adds that he has lived his entire life avoiding eye contact, so it's not like he can't use it to escape from the Miai. He tells us that he found Sakimoto, who's a professional at looking at people in the eye. They're going to hire a "killer" to do the job for them, and they're also going to bring in other professional looking people to do it for them. They don't need to hire "killers" because "the ultimate looking pro" is "colored indebtedness favoring ta ! . . / Don't care if who it is / glares high inside strike-zone the eyes of crowd" , he says. He sees the future of the country in a way that he hasn't seen before.
