In this chapter, the narrator delivers a series of soliloquys. He begins by describing the ocean as a "most frightening school" . He says that every time he waxes the ocean, people walk over it. He tells the others to be careful because it's dark in the hallway, and that if anything happens, they'll be blamed and put in jail for a crime they didn't commit. He compares the sea's edge to a "game labo stare" , and says that if something happens, it'll look like "a husband or wife or spouse . . It looks like a "letter m " . The narrator says that he's going to kill himself if he doesn't get out of this school.
